Working from home, or starting your own business from home, whether it is an internet-based business or MLM or Networking business online, is an exciting time.
It can be hard work too; there is no such thing as a business which just runs itself. All work from home opportunities will require some input from you either in terms of time, or money, or both. Some people see a “work at home” opportunity and think it is just a scam. Unfortunately there are people who will con others out of money in all walks of life, whether it is working from home, or running a charity, or buying stuff online. We all have to be aware and try to avoid the scams and con artists, but also have a little trust in genuine home business opportunties. I think there is a difference between work at home opportunities and home-based business opportunities, and will try to explain it here to see if it helps you at all.
Work from home. The promise of being able to stay at home whilst having a genuine paid job with an employer is especially appealing to stay at home mums, or work at home moms - WAHM as they are often called - as well as others who may have additional home or family life commitments. Work at Home Opportunities are actually quite rare; many employers do offer facilities of flexible working (including the opportunity to work from home for a couple of days of the week, usually to negate commuting costs and hassle, or even to free up the desk in the office for another flexible job-share employee) but actually working full-time from a home based in a paid position for an employer is still quite unusual. Often the employer may have health and safety issues with doing this, or prefers to see his employee (ie whether he is actually working or not!) during the course of the day, and even the prospective employee may have issues about working alone from home. It may suit their personal circumstances, but can also be quite isolating and require an exceptional degree of self-motivation and determination. Lots of people like the social aspect of working with others during the day and therefore employers do not have to make “home” working available for them.
People often see a Work From Home opportunity over the internet (well, they actively search for this online) and when they apply for it, find that it is not actually to work for an employer at all. If you are looking to work from home for an employer it is best to seek an employer who may offer this flexible option, and apply direct to them. If such job vacancies exist, they are unlikely to be around for long, and anyway they would not just be available on the off chance that someone might enter an appropriate keyword and find it online. The employer would tell people that this vacancy exists and it would be snapped up, I’m sure!
Home-Based Business
The other real option to Work from Home, is to start your own business, or become involved with an established networking, MLM, direct sales or other home-based business. There are lots of them about and none of these are scams! Sometimes, it is simply a misunderstanding of what the person expects to gain from responding to that particular advert. If it were a real scam, it would mean that when you answer an advertisement for a Work at Home opportunity you are immediately asked to pay for either the opportunity details, or for some other intangible promise whereby you can only work from home if you part with good money.
A “proper employer” would not ask you to pay to become an employee. You would not be working for a bona-fide employer, so DO NOT GIVE THEM MONEY at all.
Be realistic though. You might, however, be asked for money (eg. registration fees, or product purchase) to get started in your own business. In this case, you will still be working from home (so the advert to work from home is genuine, in that it allows you to run your business from home premises); but you will not be working fro an employer. You will be working for yourself; many such opportunities might also state: Be Your Own Boss. This will let you know straight away that it is not a paid job for an employer because you will not have a boss to pay you for working; if you are your own boss you have the freedom and flexibilityof working from home (for yourself) but it also means that you have the responsibility of running the business yourself even if you work from home.
In any case, if you are looking for a home-based business opportuntiy, you should check out the business opportunity before parting with any cash (as you would do, for any purchase online, or indeed to start any business whether home-based or not). Many of the businesses which are advertised as home-based, or work from home, are much, much less expensive to get started than traditional businesses and certainly less expensive than, for instance, a franchise. The fact that you can also work from home, and therefore take care of your family and other commitments, is a bonus and one which is worth spending some time (and indeed money!) on. So don’t just say all home working is a scam, and frighten others off from working for themselves from home, too. Check your facts first, and learn a little about the company, the business opportunity, even the sponsor (or the team) that you may be joining in a MLM (multi-level marketing) or networking group. The good thing about joining a MLM business is that you will be working for yourself, but not by yourself. If it is a good MLM business then they will have training and support available to help you succeed in your business, and your sponsor in particular will want to help you succeed, because if you succeed then so do they!

My parents have a pool and the business that was hired to do the cleaning is just horrible at their job. In the Summertime they are supposed to come weekly, but come often only twice per month, barely keeping the pool looking refreshing and clean.
It just turned green last week because the company's workers fail to deliver what they have promised for their customers.
Last Summer the pool lady would JUMP IN THE POOL WITH HER WORK CLOTHES ON, SWIM AROUND FOR A FEW MINUTES AND GET OUT. Its not that we didn’t mind sharing the pool with visitors, especially when it was hot, it was just a funny sight, to see the pool person, just 'accidentally fall' in the pool when they decided to come around. Hey, if they actually delivered on time, I wouldn’t even be talking about.
My father is an entrepreneur and he was saying how someone should follow the pool person around, and how easy it would be to pick up on all of their customers since everyone’s so fed up with this company. We complain to the company but all they say is how its not their fault because the workers don’t show up when their supposed to.
I’m sure it would be a low start up cost, office spaces are $300 per month including water/power, and I would just hold off on advertising in the yellow pages for a year, because that right there is where it would cost absolutely thousands. I would do my own advertising by sending out letters to people who have pools, gathering information from title companies, and try to hook a few from this company. I know it probably sounds somewhat dirty, but they do not care whatsoever about their clientele, and customers always come first. Plus I’m sure they wouldn’t want to sell their business, because my dad talked to owner before and said they have 140 clients, so the guy think he does well ’the way things are’

I work from home already doing another successful privately owned business, so I wouldn’t have to stress out about my job, or kids (I don’t have any), etc.

It's great! However, from your experience you already know that your employees can make or break your business. If you're specifically talking about pool maintenance, that shouldn't be too difficult to start. It's the pool makers that go out of business quicker because of bad product. Usually the cleaners are contracted by the pool company to start the maintenance, but the pool owner ultimately decides who they want to use to clean and maintain their pool. Of course, as you expand, some of your workers will begin to start thinking about becoming your competition.
